Living in a farming community in central Ontario I could have gone my entire life without experiencing the joy of fly fishing. I am James ‘Fly Fishing’ Mann and spent a lot of time fishing as a kid but I didn’t even have a fishing rod, just a metal pole from an electric fence and some line with hooks, but I had fun and caught lots of Catfish.
Fortunately I have a fly fishing fanatic for a brother in-law, so when I visited New Brunswick at age 21 he taught me to fly fish for Salmon and Trout. 20 years without this and he taught me in just 10 minutes.
Even though I was able to cast a fly-line in just a few short minutes I continually learn new things, even 30 years later and I never leave home in the summer with having my fly fishing gear in the car with me, just in case I see water.
It’s no secret that I spend a lot on my fly fishing hobby but I have an edge over a lot of other fly fishers. I use eBay to find most of what I want at a fair price. Don’t tell my buddies though I can get them to buy stuff from me at a little marked up price. Okay I was only kidding there Roland.
Joe, my brother-in-law, took me on my first Salmon fishing trip, fly fishing only. It was also the first time I had used my new fly rod in front of other people. I was a bit intimidated but soon learned that most are more than happy to teach others the art of fly fishing from their perspective.
I have to say, yes it’s a pun, but I was hooked immediately.
Now I am the fly fishing fanatic and for years have taken friends fishing and shared what I have learned about it. I have a few new fly fishing buddies now so I really never have to go fishing alone. In my mind fishing is something to share with friends.
Take a friend fishing and practice catch and release unless you need food. You can always take pictures and measurements to have an replica created and then someone else will have the joy of fly fishing when they catch the one you let go.
James Mann, that’s me, well I can be a bit of a fly fishing fanatic and it can be tough to get me to go home but that’s because the joy of fly fishing gets in your blood. I like to share what I learn and experience when I am on or off the water.
I also like the idea that people can be so friendly when I am fly fishing, as long as one isn’t pushy. http://www.thejoyofflyfishing.com/flyfishing/
